Our Story: The MHCSC was created in 2004 through the Community Benefit - Quality of Life Initiative, organizing efforts of Saint Joseph Health System - Sonoma County. In 2008 we incorporated as an independent organization. The founding members structured the MHCSC to be a grass roots coalition run by our active members (individual community members and representatives from public and private organizations), and sustained through voluntary and clearly committed partnerships with well organized goals. (See Membership for a list of our current active members)
Our Strength: Our greatest strengths are the diversity of people involved, our values of dignity, excellence, service, & justice, our commitment to a positive attitude & a solution oriented focus of collaboration and integration, and the tenacity and devotion of our members to reduce the stigma associated with mental health, and to Create a Safety Net for Sonoma County!
Our Vision: There will be increased access to an integrated continuum of care for the promotion of mental health and the prevention and treatment of mental illness for people living in Sonoma County.
Our Goals:
- · Increase the public's understanding of the integrative relationship between overall health and mental health in order to reduce stigma.
- Increase and improve the nature and quality of media reporting on mental health in Sonoma County for the purpose of reducing stigma.
- Normalize mental health concerns and care with attention to culturally competent messages.
- Create an easy, open door; an inviting entry to a seamless system of care.
- Engage the community in developing and strengthening an integrative health system of care - "A Safety Net" - based on our Integrated Health Path educational tool, which provides mental health services to all regardless of age, gender, ability to pay, and disorder, within a network of key health and human service providers in Sonoma County.
- Develop immediate and sustainable vehicles for mental health promotion in Sonoma County.
- Develop ongoing and sustainable vehicles for health policy and advocacy at local, regional, state and national levels.
Our Teams: To accomplish our goals we've structured our work into various teams that meet monthly and interface work quarterly at MHCSC Symposiums.
